For anyone with an even slight interest in wine a visit to one or more of the wine regions of South Africa is a must on any itinerary. Stellenbosch is certainly the most well know of the wine growing regions of the Cape and apart from Constantia, within the boundaries of the city of Cape Town itself , it is the easiest to reach from Cape Town.
It is however, only one of 26 districts, within five regions. Most of these are within the boundaries of the Western Cape Province, but there is also the Orange River Region in the Northern Cape. In the Stellenbosch area alone there are over 150 wine estates that can be visited for wine tastings, most of which are set in superb scenic settings. The estates offer a wide selection of styles and cultivars, with some focusing on a particular varietal and others producing a full range of options. All of the well known red cultivars such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir are grown in abundance, with South Africa’s own Pinotage hybrid (Pinot Noir / Hermitage) being particularly popular with those looking for something local. The white varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay are the most widely grown, with many more cultivars well established. Grapes have been grown at the Cape since early European settlement in 1652, although the fame of the Cape wines was based on a sweet Muscat d’Alexandrie, known as Vin de Constance and popular in the early 1800’s.
Although we have a general itinerary for our wine tours and our primary destination is usually the Stellenbosch region, every tour is adapted according to the needs of each group. We like to try to do some special tastings, such as pairing with cheese, chocolate or other food items; cellar tours can be arranged and if there is interest, clients can participate in their own blending. Advance warning is generally needed in order to arrange blending. We have a few favourite places but adapt according to each requirement and may even adapt to circumstances on the day. Lunch is not included in the cost unless specifically stated as there are various options on the routes.
