Hiking Tours
“There is nothing like walking to get the feel of a country. A fine landscape is like a piece of music; it must be taken at the right tempo. Even a bicycle goes too fast.” – Paul Scott Mowrer
We in South Africa are blessed with magnificent scenery and numerous attractions, as well as cultural and historical heritage. For those of us with a love of nature, hiking and outdoor activities, there is abundant opportunity to explore many of these areas on foot. Our hiking tours are designed to accommodate those who want to visit the major attractions, but at the same time want to get out into the natural environment to experience the abundance ‘close up and personal’. From the incredible variation in flora and scenery of the Cape Floristic Region – World Heritage Site, to the wild life and potential ‘big five’ safari experience of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal or Kruger National Park, our itineraries are designed to get you as close to nature as possible.
Our tours cover a range of itineraries from 8 to 14 days, that include visits to places that you may have on your ‘bucket list’, but go further in giving you the opportunity to get your boots dirty, get a feel of the surroundings and see things that others don’t. The hikes covered in the scheduled itineraries are generally easy to moderate, with private tours for smaller parties or groups being arranged for visitors looking for more challenging hiking or longer overnight treks. There is always the opportunity to extend a tour for a special interest or additional activity.
Our tour leaders are experienced, registered tourist guide with in depth knowledge of the country and regions you are visiting and the ability to act as host and interpreter of the environment. Where specialist guides are required, in the mountains and on safari, the appropriate level of expertise has been identified.
Accommodation is at a luxury level, except on the overnight treks where facilities are clean, comfortable and sometimes rustic, but always with hot showers and warm beds. Our overnight hiking tours are done ‘slackpacker’ style, with overnight luggage being transported and full catering facilities provided – you carry only a day pack and water.
Hiking tour itineraries can also be used and adapted for clients who wish to plan custom made itineraries or do self-drive tours. Guiding can be arrange for the whole tour or for the hiking or special interest components only. For most hiking tours, alternative arrangements can be made for non-hiking partners, family or friends, but fixed itinerary tours require at least six people in order for the tour to be confirmed.
