Walking Safaris and Explorer Camps
The image projected of most modern safari tours is that of a three or four tiered open safari vehicle with an experienced guide and probably a tracker, who will get you as close to the big game as is safe under various circumstances. Indeed this is a very rewarding experience and one in which you are likely to see a fair variety of game over a wide area of terrain.
Taking safaris in a new direction are the walking safaris, where you get to experience the African bush on foot. This is the most authentic way to get close to the reality of nature. While you may not see as many animals as you would from a safari vehicle you get closer to the smaller things and have greater contact with the expertise of your guide.
These tours are led by highly experienced guides with an intimate knowledge of the terrain, animal behaviour bush craft and both the flora and fauna of the region.
This can be a stand-alone experience, part of a tour package or can be an add-on to an existing tour. We recommend that walking safaris be linked with drive-safari for you to get the best of both worlds. Have a look at some of the options in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kruger National Park and Mfolozi in KwaZulu-Natal.
