About Platteklip Tours & Trails

We take our name from *Platteklip Gorge, the most popular and quickest hiking route to the top of Table Mountain. The first recorded ascent of Table Mountain by a European traveler, was by Portuguese explorer and sea captain, Antonio de Saldanha, in 1503, using this route. It has acted as the gateway route for most of the early hikers and climbers, certainly pre-dating the European explorers. The name is synonymous with the gateway to our range of bespoke tours and trails.

*Platteklip – literal translation – ‘flat stone’

Founded by Frank Dwyer to offer a support services of guiding and catering for overnight hiking trails – known in South Africa as ‘slackpacking. We have expanded to offer a full range of private day hikes and guided tours, using selected specialist guides, catering to your specific needs and interests.
